Mt. Pleasant Country Club hosts ‘Ryder Cup’ – Sports – The Daily Herald

Mt. Pleasant Country Club will host its fifth annual “Ryder Cup” weekend beginning Saturday with both the Red and Blue teams looking to go ahead in the win column after being deadlocked at two wins apiece through the initial four years of competition.

“After the first four years, we’ve had to re-pair both the teams,” MPCC manager Larry Warren said. “We have gained new members and new players on both sides so re-pairing the teams with the event tied at two wins just seemed like the perfect time.”

The Ryder Cup is a two-day, 54-hole members-only tournament featuring 18 holes of foursome, 18 holes of four-ball and 18 holes of single matches.

The tournament remains a weekend to pay tribute to Stephen “Tubby” Powell, original Ryder Cup Blue team member. At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, as in previous years, a moment of silence will be held for Powell, who was a big part of the club and the inaugural Ryder Cup.

“Everyone on both teams knows what this course and club meant to Tubby,” lifelong friend Adam Holt said. “This weekend is the perfect time for us to remember that.”

The Blue team will be captained this year by club member and lifelong Mt. Pleasant resident Sonny Trousdale.

“Our club has several golf tournaments every year, but this weekend is by far the best weekend of golf for our members,” Trousdale said. “From the opening tee shot on Saturday morning, to the steaks on Saturday night, to the presentation of the trophy late Sunday afternoon, it’s just a great weekend to be at the course.”

Captaining the Red team this year is Pee Wee Posey.

“The Red team has won the past two years and this year will be no different,” predicted Posey, who is not alone when it comes to the trash-talking that has been around the clubhouse the past few weeks.

Posey will be joined on the Red team by the father/son duo of Matt and Steve Anderson, Terry Whitwell, Al Plank, Byron Jones and Carl Lovett — all team members since the tournament’s inception. Rounding out the Red team are Drew DeRidder, Steve Hodge, Pete Tracy, Bobby Boyd, Destry Boyd, Jerry Brunson, Rodney Patterson and the father/son duo of Lance and Larry Warren.

Trousdale’s Blue team will consist of founding team members Rodney Massey, Jimmy Hines, Chuck Grooms, Adam Holt, Marty Cummins and Bryant Brewer. Completing the Blue team are Gerald Mims, Dan Morency, Jay Baker, Brandon Roberts, Roger Brooks, Bubba Holt, Ken McArthur, Bryant Workman and Craig Mullins.

Mt. Pleasant Country Club will be closed on Saturday. Tee times Sunday will stop at 10:00 am.
